More information
The exposition reflects events related to the Russo-Turkish Liberation War of 1877-78. The building in which it is housed is the work of Bulgarian masters and bears the full features of our Revival architecture.
The two-storey building with 12 rooms functioned as a Turkish residence, in which Mehmed Bey, governor of Byala, lived at the end of the Ottoman rule. During the Russo-Turkish War, it housed the imperial headquarters. Here lived the Russian Emperor Alexander II, the Minister of War Dmitry Milyutin, Count N. Ignatiev, the artist Pavel Kovalevsky, the Grand Duke Al. Alexandrovich and other military and civilian figures. Two military councils were held in this house, whose decisions were crucial to the overall course of the war. One of them was attended by General Gurko together with the future Bulgarian prince Battenberg.
