- The Historical Museum of the town of Ihtiman was opened in 1951 in the house of the prominent writer Goncho Belev, where the first exposition was created, reflecting the ethnographic wealth of the Ihtiman region. The first collection is based on donations from local citizens. In the 1960s, the museum profiled itself as a museum of the history of capitalism and the revolutionary labor movement. It was moved to the city center, where an exposition corresponding to the profile of the museum was opened. The funds of the museum are constantly enriched and expanded. Museum specialists do not limit themselves to collecting exhibits and continue to search for and store materials that create an archaeological department, ethnographic, revival, etc. In 1970, the museum moved to a new building built specifically for the purpose. A new exposition is opened in it and an ethnographic exhibition is exhibited on the first floor. Under the direction of the museum in 1978 archeological excavations of the fortress "Markova mehana", an element of the fortification system at "Trayanovi vrata" began. Ten years of research reveal interesting facts from the ancient history of the area, and the found materials are valuable exhibits in the museum's funds. Over the years, the museum has established itself as a cultural institute, searching for, preserving and promoting the historical heritage of the Ihtiman region.
