The medieval fortress Trayanovi Vrata is located about 54 km from Sofia, near Ihtiman. It dates back to the 2nd century, when it stood on the border between Thrace and Macedonia. Apart from the fact that the fortress changed several names, it was also a defensive point on the line Sredets - Nis - Belgrade from Constantinople. One of the most memorable battles between the armies of Tsar Samuel and the Byzantine Emperor Basil II was fought there.
