More information
The Vasil Levski Museum is part of the Regional History Museum in Lovech.
It is dedicated to Vasil Levski, who made Lovech the center of the Internal Revolutionary Organization. It is located in the Architectural and Historical Reserve "Varosha", where the houses have a typical folk architecture from the Renaissance era. It is included in the Hundred National Tourist Sites.
The Vasil Levski Museum was established in 1954. It is housed in the house of Ivan Krachula, father of the famous Bulgarian national revolutionary Hristo Ivanov (the Great), in the Drastene neighborhood. The first exposition reflects the life and tumultuous activity of the Apostle during the period when he was in Lovech.
With the implementation of active collecting activities, the materials in the main museum fund increase, as well as the constant interest in the work of Vasil Levski. This necessitates a new museum building, which was built next to the Church of the Holy Mother of God, on the site where the house of the Lovech Private Revolutionary Committee activist Marin Poplukanov once stood. The project of the building is by engineer Ivan Nikolov. The second exposition (1967) was arranged in it.
A new reconstruction was carried out and on July 17, 1982 the third exposition was opened. It is shaped by its specificity in one main theme: "The revolutionary activity of Vasil Levski in the Lovech region and the rise of Lovech as the center of the Internal Revolutionary Organization."
In 2008 a completely renovated exposition with modern information technologies was opened. It is located on two levels and reflects the struggles of the Bulgarian people for national liberation, as well as the various revolutionary activities of Vasil Levski. Among the most valuable items on display is the country's richest collection of personal belongings of Levski. The museum keeps his sword, dagger, small printing house, fake Turkish seals, receipts, as well as his original portrait from 1870.
