More information
3 km east of Svishtov are the remains of the Roman legionary camp Nove - the best-studied military camp located in the border area of the former Roman Empire. Nove was founded on the banks of the Danube as a military camp of the VIII August Legion around 45 AD. The camp consisted of observation towers and fortresses, which housed military units - cohorts and legions.
Nove was an extremely important part of the defensive line of the Roman Empire, as the legion stationed here protected the conquered territories in Thrace and Macedonia from the invasions of tribes coming from the east.
Gradually the ancient city changed its appearance, new buildings, churches, workshops of craftsmen appeared. In the V-VI century Nove was also the seat of a bishop.
Today, only the remains of former fortifications and buildings can be seen. A computer reconstruction of the military camp and the buildings around it can be seen on information boards among the remains. Nove was last mentioned at the beginning of the 7th century.
Nove has been declared an architectural monument of national importance. In the archeological reserve there is a visitor center, which offers various services - a guided tour of the site, talks.
