More information
The aul of Khan Omurtag is a military fortification (fortified Bulgarian palace), the construction of which is associated with the construction activities of Khan Omurtag in 822. It is a work of the Pliskov-Preslav culture. It is believed that this is the palace mentioned in the Chatalar inscription. The aul is also associated with a previous cultural layer dating to the IV-Vc, which speaks of a Gothic presence in the area. In 1976 a church from the 4th century was discovered here with preserved remains of the earliest Christian frescoes in the Bulgarian lands.
The village is located in the area "Hisar Kale" in the municipality of Veliki Preslav, about 2 km south of the village of Khan Krum and the river Kamchia and about 10 km from the towns of Shumen and Veliki Preslav. It is reached by a dirt road serving the local farmers rather than the archeological site. Apart from the signposts on the road between Veliki Preslav and Shumen, there are no other signs pointing to the palace. With the exception of one of the sites, the site is undeveloped and in the process of archaeological research.
