It is located just above the town of Lovech, on a hill called “Hisarya”. The beginning of the fortress is IX-X century with mainly defensive function. In the 12th century the fortress was expanded and completed and turned into a urban citadel. Many residential and church buildings have been built. At the beginning pf the 14th century the citadel was the residence of Despot Ivan Alexander. The fortress played an important defensive role in the invation of the Ottoman Turks. Today, a larger part of the fortress has been explored and restored. It reveals a beautiful view of the town Lovech.
