More information

Misionis was a large ancient fortress city. It was located 7 km from the town of Targovishte in the Krumovo Kale area, at the northern end of the steep gorge of the Vrana River in the Preslav Mountains. The fortress dates from the V-VI century.
After archeological excavations, remains of fortress walls 3-4 meters high, remains of a huge church, guard rooms, residential buildings were found. The slopes of the hill were covered with neighborhoods, and in one of the neighborhoods was opened a second large Christian church - the basilica. Marble columns, antique stone objects, Roman pottery, medieval necropolises, etc. were also found in the area.
The fortress of Misionis is believed to have existed until the end of the 14th century and was destroyed during the Ottoman invasion.
