More information
Pliska - About 29 km from Shumen and only 2 km from the modern town of Pliska are the remains of the first Bulgarian capital. Pliska was the capital of the First Bulgarian State in the period from 681 to 893. Today visitors can see the East Gate, which was the main entrance to the fortress. Now this is the main entrance to the reserve. About 1.5 km from it is the Great Basilica. Tourists can walk around the Throne Palace - the so-called Omurtag Palace, which served as representative of the Bulgarian rulers in the first half of the ninth century. In the area are the remains of the so-called "Small Palace". Everywhere you can see the walls of large cut blocks with decorative joints, bathrooms, plumbing and reservoirs.
At the northeast corner of the fortress is the museum, which exhibits the finds found in the area.
