Natural History Museum Sofia

Natural History Museum Sofia - National Museum of Natural History Sofia is the only national institution directly involved in the preservation of scientific collections of living and non-living nature from Bulgaria and the world. The main priorities of the museum are the study of biological diversity, environmental protection and the evolution of organisms. In this regard, the main task of the NMNHS is the comprehensive study of the fauna, flora, fossils, minerals and rocks of Bulgaria and other countries. The developed scientific directions are taxonomy, faunistics, zoogeography and ecology of arachnids, centipedes, insects and all classes of vertebrates; taxonomy of fossil mammals, birds and brachiopods; floristics; mineralogy. Some areas are developing with advantage and as a result, the National Museum of Natural History Sofia is a national center for biospeleology, archaeozoology and paleontology of vertebrates, the study of bats. Insect research is also highly developed.

Along with the scientific work, the museum activity for maintaining the exposition and enriching and processing the scientific collections is also developing.
