Regional Historical Museum - Blagoevgrad was founded in 1952 and has a well-developed structure: departments "Archeology", "Ethnography", "Bulgarian lands XV - beginning. of the XX century ”,“ New and recent history ”,“ Nature ”,“ Art-ven ”,“ Funds ”,“ Public relations ”, as well as service units: laboratory for conservation and restoration and library.

The museum has a modern building, which has a highly professional exhibition of halls. Regional Historical Museum - Blagoevgrad stores over 160 thousand exhibits. Special attention deserves: a unique collection of cult figures from prehistoric times; materials from the Thracian era; a collection of tombstones and vessels, early Bulgarian ornaments and artistic ceramics from Melnik; Revival literature; unique ethnographic collections of fabrics, costumes, ceramics, metal and wood; valuable documentary materials and personal belongings of the activists of the national liberation movement; a rich collection of endemic plants, vertebrates and invertebrates, rocks and minerals; paintings by Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, drawings by Vladimir Dimitrov - the Master and thousands of works of old, medieval and contemporary art.

In 2010, the museum became the first museum in the country to host an interactive exhibition for children "Museum Children's Corner" under the project "Improving the work of Bulgarian museums with children and young people." In 2014, a room for augmented reality was opened under the project "Transboundary environmental information" cells "in the municipalities of Doksato and Banite, with the contribution of the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation."

The Regional Historical Museum - Blagoevgrad also has an Exposition "Birthplace of Georgi Izmirliev - the Macedonian" in the Varosha district.

The museum has a comfortable multifunctional conference hall, equipped with modern technological means.
