The museum is located in the central part of Pleven, located in a two-storey building built in 1888 for the needs of the army. Th activity of the museum is the preservation and promotion of cultural monuments, natural specimens, flora and fauna in the Pleven region, where significant archeological sites have been discovered- the Roman city of Ulpia Escus near the village of Gigen, the late antique and early Byzantine fortress Storgozia near Pleven, the Middle Ages fortress in Nikopol.  By profile, the museum has a general history with a natural science department. Its structure includes the following main specialised areas and service units: Archeology; History of Bulgaria XV - XIX centuries; New and recent history; Ethnography; Nature; Funds, scientific archive and specialised library; Media relations and museum educational programs; Atelier for restoration and conservation; Photo laboratory.
