More information

It is located 3 km east of Svishtov in the direction of Ruse. The systematic archaeological research of Nowe began in 1960 by teams from the Archaeological Institute with a museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the University of Warsaw (Poland). In 1970, they were joined by an expedition from the University of Poznan (Poland). Representatives of the museums in Svishtov and Veliko Tarnovo also take part in the excavations.

The camp has a rectangular shape with dimensions of 494 (485) at 365 m, which makes 18.03 (or 17, 7) hectares. It was originally surrounded by an earthen rampart and ditches. The shaft, 4 m wide at the base and 2 m wide on the platform, is made of adobe. In its body are located the wooden towers 41 m apart.

On the eve of the wars of Emperor Trajan with the Dacians, the replacement of wooden and earthen buildings with stone ones was completed. Next stages in the stone construction we observe after the Gothic invasions in the middle of the III century and in the IV-VI century when the fortress was expanded by another 10 ha to the east.

During the excavations the most significant stone buildings of the legionary fortress and the late ancient city were discovered.
