Sandanski is a town in southwestern Bulgaria. It is located in Blagoevgrad district and is the administrative center of Sandanski municipality. It is named after the famous Bulgarian revolutionary Yane Sandanski.
 
In the region of Sandanski it is believed that the leader of the greatest uprising in antiquity Spartacus from the Thracian tribe Medi was born and lived. The monument to Spartacus is one of the symbols of the city. 
 
Sandanski is the best recognized natural sanatorium in Europe for the treatment of diseases of the respiratory system.
