More information
Shumen Fortress is one of the most famous landmarks in Bulgaria and the region of Shumen. The remains of the fortress are located 3 km from the center of today's city. The fortress is located on the Shumen plateau.
The Shumen fortress was probably built by the Thracians, and was completed and restored by Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians. It is believed that the first fortification on this site was built 3200 years ago, which makes it one of the oldest in Bulgaria. Conquered and destroyed several times, the Shumen fortress was revived for a new life and lasted until 1444.
During the First Bulgarian Kingdom (681 AD - 1018 AD) the fortification played an important role due to its proximity to the old Bulgarian capitals Pliska and Preslav. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185 - 1396) the town of Shumen became an important economic and cultural center for the state. Today Shumen Fortress has been revived as a popular tourist destination. It is exhibited as an open-air museum. The remains are easily accessible to tourists, there are alleys and signposts. Perhaps the greatest interest for visitors is the restored tower of the fortress, which reveals a beautiful view of the town of Shumen and the Shumen Plateau Nature Park.
You can learn more about the fortress on site from a guide. Talks in Bulgarian, Russian and English are available. In a small pavilion next to the fortress you can buy additional materials - books and brochures. The fortress is accessible to tourists all year round.
