More information
Srebarna - The Srebarna Reserve is the Eldorado of the Swamp Birds. This is how the famous Hungarian traveler Felix Kanitz describes it, who connects its beauty with the legend of the lost "Golden City". It is located near the village of Srebarna, only 2 km from the Danube River and 16 km west of Silistra. The reserve has been declared a world cultural heritage site. More than 220 species of birds nest in the lake, including very rare and endangered ones such as the Dalmatian Pelican, the Little Cormorant and the Shiny Ibis. The animal kingdom is represented by 41 species of mammals, 11 species of reptiles, 10 species of amphibians and 24 species of fish. And the central part of the lake is covered with shiny water grass, which shines like silver on clear moonlit nights. In the lake you can also see many interesting and endangered plants such as water lily, marsh snowdrop, marsh forget-me-not and insectivorous mech. Two thirds of its area is occupied by reeds, which reaches 6-7 m in height and form many floating islands (cats). You have just seen an otter stick its nose over the water or a European wild cat appear from the bush.
