More information

One of the most magnificent megalithic monuments discovered in our lands is the Thracian sanctuary near the village of Tatul, Momchilgrad municipality. It is located only 200 m from the village and about 15 km from Momchilgrad.
The sanctuary is a rock massif, and its top - a truncated pyramid. The complex consists of two sarcophagi, a quadrangular bed for the main altar and a three-meter well. It dates from the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 4th millennium BC. This is evidenced by the pottery found in the region.
In the XIII - XII centuries BC. the sanctuary was damaged by earthquakes. According to historians, the sarcophagus, the truncated pyramid and the side chamber illustrate the burials of Orpheus and the Thracian king Rezos, who according to mythology reigned in the southern part of the Rhodopes and took part in the legendary Trojan War.
In ancient times a massive stone wall was built of huge blocks in the shape of a parallelepiped. Inside the sanctuary, several buildings have been discovered, one of which is a magnificent temple with preserved 6-meter walls. A whole series of bronze rings - seals has been discovered since antiquity.
In 2011 a campaign "Wonders of Bulgaria" was conducted and after electronic voting the site was chosen as one of the 10 wonders of Bulgaria.
