More information

The town of Veliki Preslav is located on the river Golyama Kamchia, 30 km from the capital of the First Bulgarian State Pliska, 20 km from the regional center Shumen and 25 km from the town of Targovishte. The city was founded more than 1100 years ago as a fortress city during the reign of Prince Boris I (852 - 889). After the Preslav Church-People's Assembly in 893 it was proclaimed the capital of the Bulgarian state.
Preslav is known as a center of spiritual and literary life, is associated with the Slavic script and the Golden Age of the Bulgarians during the reign of Tsar Simeon I (ruled 893 - 927).
In the era of the Bulgarian Middle Ages Preslav became one of the most beautiful and majestic cities in Southeast Europe, from which are preserved significant cultural monuments of Pliska and Preslav. Here are located the temple-monument "St. St. Cyril and Methodius ”, built on the occasion of 1000 years since the death of St. Methodius and Tsar Simeon, and the building of the Archaeological Base at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The temple is located in one of the quietest corners of Veliki Preslav. An old pine forest hides in its heart the holy monastery. Nearby is a gazebo where tourists can relax. Nearby is the parking lot for visitors. Veliki Preslav is among the Hundred National Tourist Sites in Bulgaria and has been declared a national reserve by decree of the Council of Ministers 161 of 1958.
